Background Context
James Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013-2017 and was terminated about several months into Donald Trump's first administration as commander-in-chief. At the moment, the director was leading an probe into international campaign influence and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and Trump's campaign.
During his tenure, Mr Comey sparked a backlash from liberal politicians when he declared just days before the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating presidential nominee the candidate's use of a non-governmental email account. Charges against Hillary Clinton were never brought, resulting in disapproval from the Republican party as well.
Current Allegations
Government attorneys allege Mr Comey gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They say he misled the upper house by saying he had not approved someone at the FBI to leak to journalistic entities information about the government examinations.
Prosecutors also allege the defendant of "improperly attempting to sway, hinder and delay" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.
Personal Comments

"Our household have been aware for considerable time that there are costs to challenging Mr Trump," he stated. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "Thus initiate a trial."
These allegations against the former director surfaced after the former president shared on social media demanding his attorney general, the attorney general, prosecute the former director and other people.
